Production Scheduling - December

This shows our schedule for December 2014. This schedule shows how we have tried to fit in most of the tasks because of the upcoming Christmas holidays, therefore we will not have time to film and get our team out to film. However, we hope to have more footage and edited on Final Cut Express after the holidays. During the Christmas holidays, we set tasks to do individually for the blog. This consisted of us looking at codes and conventions of previous music videos in which we would then apply to our own. We also filmed personal videos of Christmas parties and New years (Champagne opening); which will then be used for our music video.

We then met up during the holidays to dicuss furture plans for the upcoming month of January. We then produces a schedule plan for that month before hand. this benefited us because we were then able to call upon those who would feature in our music video. We then established suitable times and dates with the featured artist and the main artist, however, adjustments had to be made on our production schedule in January.

Favorite Pop Music video – Meghan Trainor ‘All about that bass’

Meghan Elizabeth Trainor is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and producer. She gained fame with her 2014 song "All about that bass", which reached #1 in the US charts. Musically, 'All About That Bass' is a pop and doo wop song that contains lyrics of body positive themes. This is my favourite pop music video of 2014 as it was currently released but it also sends a positive message to her target audience as she is inspiring people of any size to not change the way they are in comparison to how magazines portray slim people. I like this song not only because it features a new artists but also because the song has a really inspirational message and the video greatly in-captures it.

Trainor's hit single is catchy. It’s a song about women accepting their bodies in a world where those bodies are held up to impossible standards and constantly ridiculed. However, in some verses, it uplifts the ideas of body positivity and self-worth, and in others, it destroys those ideals by putting down other women. She encourages women to embrace their real bodies and feel confident in their size, which is tremendously empowering. I think that the message in this song is incredible as beauty and weight is such an important factor especially for young girls as the media create this idea of what beauty should be like for example like in magazines they portray skinny females as having the best figure.

The colours used within the video are candy/spring colours like baby pink, purple, mint green, baby blue, yellow peach etc. These colours highly appeal to the teenage audience because female teenagers are thought to be more insecure. The colours used throughout the video are very feminine and they symbolise beauty. These colours highly appeal the younger target audience as the video is set in one location and to do this video, a green screen was set up and edited to make the background all pink. The video uses a lot of mise-en-scene such as the props like balloons, Barbie dolls, doll hour, all pink bedroom, magazines, tea sets etc. The characters and the artist herself are dressed to relate to the video as a fashion inspiration to inform her target audience that they can wear anything too. This video conforms to the typical representation of young girls. The video s very eye catching and energetic as the beat of the music engages the audience to watch and dance along. This music video is sending a good message out positively through enthusiasm.

Fast/Slow paired editing task

This Fast/slow video shows a group exercise that we had participated in, in sequence to understand the use of various shots and camera angles and what effect it gives. We had filmed one of our class mates around the school to achieve this video. Our objective was to capture them using many different camera angles/shots. Firstly, we took different shots around the school with each person in the group trying of different camera shots, however we had no idea what type of music will be added to the video and what it will be edited to and this made it quite challenging, however a fun activity to do as a group. This task was not simple as I have not used an editing program before, however the more you experiment with the program the simple it gets as you gain knowledge on how everything works. Once the shots were taken, we then had to input the music. After listening to the music several times, we had a group discussion on how the shots should be placed depending on the Fat/Slow music. For example, when the music got slower, we ‘slow mo’ our clips to sync in with the music and when the beat of the music increased we speeded up the clip. We also tried to shorten our clips when the music sped up to give the short music video a fast pace. We chose the appropriate shots for the video in order to make it look realistic and not messy and all over the place. When placing them in order we had to either slow the shot down by decreasing the number, or speed the shot up by increasing the number. We played around with various filters and edited most of the shots such as use of ‘haze’ effect to give the video a very slow and unsettled look but this also captures the feel of the music. On the whole, I think that the video does illustrate how significant sound and pace of music is when editing the video. This task allowed me to practice for my real production of a music video. I have learnt and understood how to edit a final cut. I also learnt how to change the final cut file into a QuickTime file. I have picked up many skills from this task that will be useful when editing my production music video.

Summary of Key Theories

This is my second blog for A2 Media studies and this blog will keep you updated with my research and planning for my coursework based on Pop music videos. Research task will be carried out independently, however the planning and music video will be produced by my group where we will go various locations of London to ensure our video meets the conventions of a typical music video. The research and planning will also be recorded onto the blog.
