Pop Music video – Meghan Trainor ‘All about that bass’
Meghan
Elizabeth Trainor is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and producer. She
gained fame with her 2014 song "All about that bass", which reached
#1 in the US charts. Musically, 'All About That Bass' is a pop
and doo wop song that contains lyrics of body positive themes. This is my
favourite pop music video of 2014 as it was currently released but it also
sends a positive message to her target audience as she is inspiring people of
any size to not change the way they are in comparison to how magazines portray
slim people. I like this song not only because it features a new artists but
also because the song has a really inspirational message and the video greatly
in-captures it.
Trainor's
hit single is catchy. It’s a song about women accepting their bodies in a world
where those bodies are held up to impossible standards and constantly
ridiculed. However, in some verses, it uplifts the ideas of body positivity and
self-worth, and in others, it destroys those ideals by putting down other
women. She encourages women to embrace their real bodies and feel confident in
their size, which is tremendously empowering. I think that the
message in this song is incredible as beauty and weight is such an important
factor especially for young girls as the media create this idea of what beauty
should be like for example like in magazines they portray skinny females as
having the best figure.
The colours used within the video are candy/spring
colours like baby pink, purple, mint green, baby blue, yellow peach etc. These
colours highly appeal to the teenage audience because female teenagers are
thought to be more insecure. The colours used throughout the video are very
feminine and they symbolise beauty. These colours highly appeal the younger
target audience as the video is set in one location and to do this video, a
green screen was set up and edited to make the background all pink. The video
uses a lot of mise-en-scene such as the props like balloons, Barbie dolls, doll
hour, all pink bedroom, magazines, tea sets etc. The characters and the artist
herself are dressed to relate to the video as a fashion inspiration to inform
her target audience that they can wear anything too. This video conforms to the
typical representation of young girls. The video s very eye catching and
energetic as the beat of the music engages the audience to watch and dance
along. This music video is sending a good message out positively through
enthusiasm.
